THE HUNT HOUSE
Original Architects: Craig Ellwood and Jerrold Lomax
The Hunt House
“It is without doubt one of most important remaining modern houses in Southern California, propelled by 1950s confidence about L.A.’s postwar future”—Christopher Hawthorne The LA Times
Commissioned by Victor and Elizabeth Hunt, Craig Ellwood and his associate, Jerrold Lomax, completed this beachfront jewel box in 1957. In 2013, applications had been filed to demolish the historic structure, with the hope of replacing it with a 5500-square-foot McMansion. Thanks to community pushback and a new set of owners devoted to its preservation, the house was not only spared, but every square inch was also carefully restored. Beacon Hill handpicked new sun-bleached Philippine mahogany panels that were expertly stripped and refinished throughout the house, glimmering once again with their 1950s luster. Working from Ellwood’s plans and designs, a renovated kitchen, new headboards, vanities, desks, closets, countertops, a bar, and an entertainment area were thoughtfully created and built by Beacon Hill.
